To be eligible to transfer to or re-join South Yorkshire Police, you must:
- Be a current serving police officer or have previously served in a Home Office or other suitable force
- Have completed your probation period and be confirmed in post
- Not have any outstanding disciplines or complaints
- Have completed all mandatory training and this must be in date at the time of appointment
- Must be fit for the role, this will be assessed by medical records, completion of a medical form and an appointment with Occupational Health
- Meet vetting requirements
- Meet the attendance criteria, attendance will be viewed against absence records for the last 3 years, this will be taken into account once a provisional offer of employment has been made
- Have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to submitting your application
- All tattoos and piercings must be in line with South Yorkshire Police’s Appearance and Standards Policy. We have recently relaxed this policy, and officers and staff are permitted to have their tattoos on show while on duty provided the tattoo is not deemed inappropriate or unacceptable
- Not be a member of the British National Party (BNP) or other similar organisations
- Declare any business interest
- Declare any membership or involvement with the Reserve Forces
Consideration will be given to applications for level transfer from all Home Office Forces for appointment to the rank of constable, sergeant or inspector.
Your application will be paper sifted to ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria as above.
You will be invited to attend a competency based interview. South Yorkshire assess officers against the Competency & Values Framework (CVF). The competency level for Constables is Level 1, for Sergeants it is a mixture of both Level 1 and Level 2 and for Inspectors it is Level 2.
If successful at interview pre-employment checks will be commence. If unsuccessful at interview, you will be able to re-apply after six months unless advised otherwise.
Following succession completion of pre-employment checks you will be posted onto the next available intake.
Upon starting with South Yorkshire Police, you will attend a two-week induction course at the force training centre after which you will start on your shift.
Postings are determined when taking into account both individual preferences and the resourcing of the organisation. Whilst every effort is made to meet individuals preferences this is not always guaranteed. There will be an opportunity to discuss posting preferences in detail at the interview stage of your application. On occasion, if resourcing requirements do not align with your stated preferences/or where you can travel to, we may put your application on hold until a suitable vacancy arises.
The transfer/re-joiner process can take approximately six months from the date your application is received. However, this is subject to organisational requirement, satisfactory vetting, occupational health clearance and the date of planned intakes.
In order to support the financial costs associated with transferring the chief constable has agreed to offer relocation/removal expenses to transferring officers who at the time of their offer of employment live outside the Force area and are posted more than 50 miles from their home address. Relocation/removal expenses will normally only be considered where an officer applies to transfer to South Yorkshire Police in response to an externally placed advertisement.
An officer is able to claim the costs associated with buying and selling a property and relocation/removal costs within 12 months of appointment up to a maximum of £8,000.
If an officer in receipt of relocation/removal expenses were to leave within 3 years of joining then they would be required to repay the expenses paid under the following proportions:
- Leaving during year 1: 100% of the relocation/removal costs paid
- Leaving during years 2 and 3: 100% of the relocation/removal costs paid less 1/24th for each completed month served
If an officer in receipt of this payment were to leave, they would be required to payback under the following proportions:
- Leaving before six months: 100%
- Leaving before 12 months: 75%
- Leaving before 24 months: 50%
