South Yorkshire Police joined in the Invictus Games Trials celebrations on 25 July 2019 by signing the national Armed Forces Covenant.

By signing the covenant, the force has pledged its commitment to supporting armed forces veterans, recognising the value they contribute and acknowledging that serving personnel and military families should be treated with fairness and respect.

Moving forward, the force has pledged to:

  • Support the employment of veterans of all ages
  • Support the requirements of members of staff who are reservists by accommodating for deployment or training wherever possible
  • Recognise the transferable skills armed forces personnel bring to the organisation in the recruitment of new members of staff
  • Offer ongoing professional and mental health support for veterans and reservists employed by South Yorkshire Police
  • Inform members of staff about Project Nova and support the work they do

Chief Constable Stephen Watson signed the covenant at the Invictus Games Trials Athletes Village on Devonshire Green alongside Commodore Phil Waterhouse representing the Ministry of Defence.

He said: “We are proud to count a number of armed forces veterans as our employees.

“On making the move to civilian life, the armed services men and women have considerable skills to bring to the workplace. We recognise their contribution to society, and by signing the Armed Forces Covenant we pledge to support them.”

Commodore Phil Waterhouse, Naval Regional Commander Northern England said: “I am hugely privileged to represent the Military as South Yorkshire Police sign the Armed Forces Covenant today.

“Military Service puts huge demands on our men and women, and having the support of our local communities at home plays a critical role in our effectiveness.

“It is wonderful to see South Yorkshire Police recognising the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families add to society, and pledging to support our Armed Forces Community in the region.”

We're proud to have so many brilliant armed forces veterans and reservists as SYP employees. Watch the following videos to hear their stories, find out about their military past, and discover how they joined us.
