Police Officer Returner Scheme

The South Yorkshire Police Returner Scheme is designed to assist SYP in the return of police officers with valuable skills and experience who would otherwise retire.

The  scheme  allows  a  police  officer to  retire from  SYP  but  then  return as  an attested  officer after  a  short break of  service. Officers who retire will be  given  access  to  their commutation  lump sum and will receive partial pension abatement to ensure their remuneration package is at the same level prior to their retirement.

Key Principles

On 1 November 2019, SYP introduced a Returner Scheme for a two-year period lasting until 31 October 2021. As with the 30+ and 30++ Returner Schemes processes, the Returner Scheme grants an officer early access to their pension lump sum while continuing to serve as an attested officer.

The scheme is designed to assist SYP in the return and retention of officers with valuable skills and experience who would otherwise retire. The scheme therefore allows continuation of service as an attested officer with early access to a lump sum, which makes the scheme attractive to some officers. Its primary purpose is to assist SYP in the return and retention of those officers whom it is considered essential to retain rather than lose to retirement.

It will be open to constables, sergeants and inspectors where the officer is eligible for immediate maximum police pension and where a justifiable business case can be made for their re-engagement on the Return Scheme.

It will also be open to ex-SYP police officers at the rank of constable, sergeant and inspector, who retired from SYP since 1 November 2017.

Each officer who wishes to participate has to apply for selection, which is at the discretion of management.

Officers will be posted to existing vacancies in SYP in line with the normal policies.

Chief inspectors and above will only be permitted to participate in the scheme if there are exceptional circumstances which have been approved by EDB.

To Apply

Officers need to apply for the scheme through the e-recruitment system. Successful applications will be sent to a district commander or nominated lead for the position and location applied for, and a suitability interview will be arranged.

If successful, the posting will be confirmed by the Establishment and Deployment Board (EDB)
