A 19-year-old man arrested yesterday in connection to the death of a 22-month-old baby girl remains in custody today being interviewed by detectives.
A further detention was granted this morning (Wednesday, 23 May) at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court after detectives applied for an additional 36-hours to question the man.
Reports were received on Monday, 21 May from Sheffield Children’s Hospital at around 11.40am, of concerns for a 22-month-old baby girl who had been brought in by ambulance from her home address in Gleadless, Sheffield.
The baby had injuries that were suspected to be non-accidental and died just before 12.30am yesterday morning (Tuesday, 22 May).
A post-mortem examination carried out yesterday evening revealed the cause of death was severe head injuries.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Steve Whittaker said: “The death of a child is an undeniably harrowing and traumatic event.
“While I fully appreciate this incident has stirred an understandable, emotional reaction from people, the family need to be able to grieve for the loss of the child, at such a devastatingly young age, and I would ask people to please think about the impact that speculative comments on social media could have on them at such a heart-breaking time.
“The investigation is in the very early stages and we must ensure we comprehensively conduct all enquiries to ascertain the exact circumstances and facts in this case.”
Anyone with concerns or information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 356 of 21 May 2018.
