- How many thefts from vehicles were reported in your force for the calendar years 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016?
- How many deliberate acts of vandalism to vehicles (excluding thefts) were reported in your force for the calendar years 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016? (this would include things like keying, shattering of windows, denting and scratching)
Please could you clarify the following point(s): -
Question 3 requests deliberate acts of vandalism - we do not record if vandalism is deliberate or not and would necessitate checking every record on our Crime Management system that involved a motor vehicle to check the free text sections for details. Providing an answer would require a manual check of each record and would therefore far exceed the 18 hour Appropriate Limit. We could however provide details of the crimes where the property type is a motor vehicle and then provide you with the weapon type. Can you clarify if that would be satisfactory response and suit your needs.
No need to worry about deliberate or not – simply where a weapon has been used, no need to specify which weapon.
I approached our Crime Management System (CMS) Administrator for assistance with your request. The CMS system is used to record complaints or allegations of those matters, which the Home Office specify should be recorded as ‘crimes’. She provided me with the enclosed data and the following explanation of her search criteria:
I have provided a count of offences recorded within the following Home Office Offence classes broken down by offence recorded –
AGGRAVATED VEHICLE TAKING
THEFT OR UNAUTHORISED TAKING OF MOTOR VEHICLE
THEFT FROM MOTOR VEHICLE
CRIMINAL DAMAGE - TO VEHICLES
INTERFERING WITH A MOTOR VEHICLE
Where the offence was recorded on the CMS crime register between 2013 – 2016.
Please note – the offences CRIMINAL DAMAGE - TO VEHICLES OVER £5000 & CRIMINAL DAMAGE £5000 OR LESS - TO VEHICLES were only introduced to CMS April 2016, to explain why results are nil or very low prior to 2016.
I have also included a copy of the classification for vehicle interference to explain what circumstances would constitute such an offence. As vehicle interference may be recorded if there was an attempted theft of or from the vehicle.
I have included offence of Criminal damage to vehicles to answer the Q3.
